Rhoda's Hope
ABOUT US
What we do
Rhoda’s HOPE empowers long-term sustainable change through community-led solutions to poverty and serving those most vulnerable.
Who we serve
We predominantly serve women, children, youth & the elderly.
How we work
Our close relationship with the community means we collectively see the most pressing needs. We then consult with villagers to determine the best solution given our resources.
Together, we seek answers to problems that provide short-term relief, and long-term sustainability through education, skills training, and economic development.
WHERE WE SERVE
We currently serve the villages in and around Mzimba and have an office in the Jenda Trading Centre – Mzimba South in Northern Malawi.
What makes us special
We work to make a real difference by providing relief to the most vulnerable populations in the short term, but are equally focused on sustainability, and self-sufficiency.
We hope you’ll join us in our work to make a real, positive difference in lives of those needing it most.
Our Story
RhodasHope.org; Our name is her story.
Rhoda’s story is one of heartbreak, tragedy, and ultimately…hope.
Rhoda Masingi was born and raised in South Africa with her father & two older brothers. She experienced losing all of them in a short period, leaving her feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do with her life. As the only female in her family, she felt a sense of duty to be her brothers’ keeper and started helping her brother’s children with their education. Through this process, she found her passion for helping others.
In 2011, Rhoda heard of the tragic death of a young pregnant woman in the Jenda area of Malawi, where her father was from. This news deeply affected her as a woman and mother, and she began doing research on how she could help. She learned of the plight of orphaned children due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and decided to take action. Rhoda developed relationships with village leaders and started providing food, school supplies, and medical assistance to the children.
Rhoda’s individual initiative grew into the Rhoda Foundation Development Initiative (RHOFODI), which was officially registered as a non-profit organization in Malawi in 2015. RHOFODI aims to help displaced and underprivileged children, women, and youth in Malawi, irrespective of their political, religious, and cultural connections. The organization works closely with the community, listening to their needs and working with them to achieve their goals.
The foundation has helped build a hostel for girls, purchased land for farming, and provided funding for various community projects. Villagers work on these projects, contributing their time, labor, and financial resources. The community’s efforts have been successful in creating self-sufficient, vibrant, and prosperous communities.
Rhoda’s Hope, a sister 501c3 in the United States, was created to assist in garnering funding for the needs of these communities. The foundation welcomes others to join them in their mission to transform villages into self-sufficient, vibrant, and prosperous communities.
Rhoda (and Rhodashope.org) believe in the resilience of a community. We have made a significant impact on the lives of women and children in Malawi and invite you to join our community.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Supported over 200 orphans and other vulnerable children affected/infected by HIV/AIDS who live around Jenda, Mzimba area.
Quality education is a catalyst for socioeconomic development and growth. Therefore, in addition to the daily needs of the vulnerable children, children were given the necessary funds to attend school and have been given educational materials which included books, uniforms, and pencils
Improved sanitation in schools and communities. Girls often have missed school during their menstrual cycle. This is a pervasive problem throughout the region, as discussed in this report from UNESCO.
Rhoda Foundation addressed this problem through a program that women soap, pads, deodorant, buckets to take baths, toothbrushes, and toothpaste to help them be able to attend school regularly.
Aids youth development through sports activities and workshops.
